For those of us old enough to remember the 1950s sitcom "Father Knows Best," we mourn today's passing of actress Lauren Chapin from cancer at age 80. To generations of viewers, she will forever be remembered as Kitten Anderson, the youngest daughter in the beloved family navigating a more innocent time in America. Beyond the screen persona was a woman of remarkable vitality, humor, grace, and a survivor of a very tough life after television.
Some years ago, Lauren and I acted together in a few old-time radio recreation plays before live audiences, and the time spent working with her was great. She was endlessly engaging; she delighted in sharing stories of early television, and she had lost none of the charm that had endeared her to audiences almost three quarters of a century ago. Her laughter came easily, and her warmth filled the stage.
Those who knew her personally will remember not only a pioneering television actress, but a lovely and lively lady—full of stories and full of heart.
